 Review

“A witty musical that is guaranteed to keep your feet tapping and body moving. This is a rib-tickling ride on a television game show with a twist – the audience gets to decide how the show will end. If you’re up for a good laugh and a great musical theatre this is a great show for you.”

Khanyisa Sigwanda (Cue, National Arts Festival 2015)

“…the result is an evening of pure entertainment with catchy songs

Beverley Brommert (Cape Argus)

“…upbeat and lively original songs… providing easy and merry entertainment.”

ABOUT THE SHOW

Witty musical theatre comedy comes to festival with a bang!

Following rave reviews and sold out houses during its Cape Town season earlier this year, You Bet Your Life! returns to Grahamstown to find out, once and for all, if Jonny’s been naughty or nice…

Hailed as “…an evening of pure entertainment…” (Cape Argus) with “…lively original songs…” (What’s on in Cape Town) this is one show nobody looking for a devilishly good time out at the theatre should miss!

Spoofing reality programs and our obsession with TV game shows; the audience meets recently deceased Jonny who finds himself trapped in a rather unconventional game show where scenes from his life are replayed with purgatorial relish. Hosted by the charming Timothy Radcliffe, the audience is introduced to Jonny’s neurotic mother, his crazy ex-girlfriends, a ferocious Russian drag performer and a host of other characters who all seem bent on keeping Jonny in limbo as Timothy tries to manipulate things to secure his own redemption.

Presented by ROLKSA Productions, the Ovation–award winning team behind crowd-pleasing hits such as I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Coward & Cole and Edges, You Bet Your Life! is a rib-tickling ride where the audience decides which way the chips are going to fall. Featuring “…thee hugely talented actors…” (Cue, 2014), Roland Perold, David Fick & Amy Trout, this production also boasts live piano by Drew Rienstra and choreography by William Jones. Book, music and lyrics are by Roland Perold & David Fick.

You Bet Your Life! is a musical comedy of devilish delight. Will Jonny be able to convince the audience that he was a good guy? Or will he be stuck in afterlife TV reruns forever? Only a trip to You Bet Your Life! can answer these questions!

Roland Perold (Co-creator and Performer)

Roland Perold is an accomplished actor, musical director and producer. He holds a BMus Degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Performer’s Licentiate in Musical Theatre from Trinity College and a MMus Degree from Bath Spa University in the U.K. Roland is the founder of ROLSKA Productions.

After appearing in The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady at the Durban Playhouse Roland moved to Cape Town to further his studies at the Waterfront Theatre School where his training programme included classes in singing, acting and dancing. This culminated in a Licentiate with Distinction in Musical Theatre Performance.

Having gained traction as cabaret performer Roland was asked to provide entertainment on the RMS St. Helena as part of the Fine Music Radio Music Cruise in 2010. On-board he produced and presented a series of cabaret performances delighting audiences on the ship as well as on the island where a special concert was held for the people of St. Helena.

ROLSKA Productions was established in 2009 and won a Standard Bank Ovation Award in 2010 for its smash hit production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” at the South African National Arts Festival. The company was invited to present the award winning song cycle “EDGES” on the Arena Platform at the 2011 Festival.

In 2012 another smash hit delighted audiences as ROLSKA Productions brought together Roland and Godfrey Johnson for: “Coward & Cole”, a two piano cabaret extravaganza. In the same year Roland was asked to write an original musical for The Waterfront Theatre School: “Tweet – The Musical” featured book, music and lyrics by Perold with dramaturgy and direction by Paul Griffiths. After this Perold realised that he wanted to focus on new writing and developing the fringe musical theatre landscape in South Africa. This lead to him enrolling for further study in the U.K. during which time he wrote his second original musical, “The Last Note”, which played in Cape Town, Grahamstown and in Bath.

Roland returned to South Africa having received his Masters in Music with distinction and brings his artistic and entrepreneurial skill set to new writing; having taken up the charge to develop original musical theatre locally.

In 2013 Roland started collaborating with David Fick on his third musical; a devilishly delightful comedy called “You Bet Your Life!” which opened to rave reviews in Grahamstown, 2014. This production has secured a Cape Town run and will be seen at Alexander in March 2015.
